Glaucoma And Its Types

Glaucoma is an eye disease that occurs when the optic nerve of the eye gets damaged due to increased pressure inside the eyes. It is often known as the silent thief of vision as it progresses slowly. As it doesn't show any noticeable symptoms, in the beginning, most people lose their vision before they notice any problem in their eyes. Glaucoma is often controlled but can't be cured completely with the help of eye drops like

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness across the world. A fluid, known as aqueous humour is continuously produced by your eyes which fills the front part of the eyes and nourishes them. This fluid normally leaves the eyes through the drainage channels located between the iris and the cornea of the eyes.

But when by any means these drainage meshworks get blocked then the fluid can't flush out of the eyes normally and get retained inside. This in turn increases the pressure inside the eyes, which is known as intraocular eye pressure. This increased intraocular pressure damages the optic nerve of the eye. This optic nerve sends the signal to our brain to see an object. Any kind of damage to this nerve will lead to blurred vision or permanent blindness. Most people use careprost eye drops for reducing the intraocular pressure thus preventing the progression of glaucoma.

Glaucoma is mainly of the following two types:

Open-Angle Glaucoma

This is also known as wide-angle glaucoma and is the most common form of glaucoma. In this type of glaucoma, the drainage channel in your eyes seems to be normal but the fluid still can't leave the eyes as it used to.

Angle Closure Glaucoma

This is also known as narrow-angle glaucoma and is more prevalent in Asia. In this, the drainage channel between the iris and the cornea of your eyes becomes thin or narrow due to which aqueous humour can't flush out in the normal way.

Note: Careprost effectively gives you relief if you are suffering from open-angle glaucoma.

Risk Factors Of Glaucoma

Though glaucoma is the result of increased intraocular pressure, various factors may increase your chances of getting glaucoma. You are more prone to glaucoma if you:

Belong to African American, Irish, Russian or Hispanic ancestry.
Are above 60 years of age.
Have a family background of glaucoma.
Have myopia or hypermetropia
Have blurred vision
Have high blood sugar levels
Are taking medicines like corticosteroids.
Had undergone eye surgery or have an eye injury
Have thin cornea at centre
Have hypertension or heart disease

Glaucoma Symptoms

Open-angle glaucoma doesn't show symptoms at an early stage. Its symptoms usually occur at a later stage. That is why it is also known as a sneak thief of vision. However, the symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma are quite fast and can be noticed in the very beginning. Some of its common symptoms are:

Halos around the light
Blurred vision
Red eyes
Pain and swelling in the eyes
Indigestion
Nausea

Though symptoms of glaucoma can be reduced effectively with the help of medications like careprost eye drops, several other measures will also help in overcoming the glaucoma symptoms.

Eat Healthy Food

Like your other body,y parts of your eyes also need a proper and healthy diet. Include green leafy vegetables, coloured fruits and berries in your meal. They contain all the essential nutrients and vitamins required for maintaining the health of your eyes and for improved vision.

Exercise

Exercise will help in boosting your blood circulation. For good vision, a sufficient amount of blood should reach your eyes. But while doing exercise, take some precautionary measures as an intense workout will increase your heart rate, which may increase the intraocular pressure. So apart from careprost eye drops, brisk walking and mild exercises will help in reducing the symptoms of glaucoma.

Protect Your Eyes

If you have an eye injury then you are more prone to glaucoma. So always wear protective gear during sports or any other activity that may cause any kind of injury to your eyes.

Keep Your Eyes Safe From Sunlight

Harsh sun rays may damage your eye, or if you have glaucoma, then prolonged exposure to harmful sun rays may further make it worse. So try to wear shades or a hat while going outside on a bright sunny day.

Sleep In Correct Position

Your sleeping position also affects your vision. If you already have glaucoma then avoid keeping your eyes on a pillow on your arm as it may make the condition even worse. According to research, it has been found that people with obstructive sleep apnea are at higher risk of getting glaucoma.

Change Your Medications

If you are taking any steroids then consult your doctor first as their high dose or prolonged use may increase the intraocular pressure thus leading to glaucoma.

Medications

Apart from the above effective measures, medications like careprost eye drops and oral pills are also found to be quite helpful in minimising the symptoms of glaucoma.

Eyedrops

Most doctors firstly prescribe eye drops like careprost to control the progression of glaucoma. Careprost contains bimatoprost which belongs to a drug class of prostaglandin analogues. Careprost helps in preventing your vision by reducing intraocular pressure. This can be achieved by stimulating the outflow of the retained aqueous humour from inside the eyes. Besides treating ocular hypertension, careprost is also used to increase the length, thickness and colour of the eyelashes.

Apart from careprost or other eye drops belonging to prostaglandin drug class(latanoprost, travoprost, tafluprost and latanoprostene bunod )other eye drops are:

Alpha-adrenergic agonists
Rho-kinase inhibitor
Miotic or cholinergic agents

Oral Pills

If careprost or other eye drops don't suit you, then your doctor will prescribe oral pills like beta-blockers and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. These drugs either help in improving the drainage of the retained fluid or may slow down the production of the fluid.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that slowly injure the optic nerve, the «cable» that carries visual information from the eye to the brain. In many people this damage is linked to higher-than-ideal pressure inside the eye, but it’s important to know that glaucoma can sometimes happen even when pressure readings look «normal.» The reason glaucoma can be so dangerous is that early vision loss usually affects the outer (peripheral) vision first, and the brain often «fills in» what’s missing, so people may feel fine until significant, irreversible damage has already occurred. The goal of treatment is to slow or stop further loss, because vision that’s already gone typically can’t be restored.

The two most talked-about types are open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is the more common form worldwide and tends to progress quietly. The eye’s internal fluid (aqueous humor) is still being made normally, but over time it doesn’t drain efficiently enough, so pressure may gradually rise and stress the optic nerve. Angle-closure glaucoma happens when the drainage angle becomes too narrow or suddenly closes. When it closes abruptly, it can cause a rapid pressure spike with symptoms such as severe eye pain, redness, headache, nausea or vomiting, and halos around lights. That sudden form is a true emergency because it can damage vision quickly, so it’s not something to «wait out» or self-treat.

Risk is influenced by several factors, including age, family history, certain ethnic backgrounds, severe nearsightedness or farsightedness, thinner corneas, prior eye injuries or surgeries, and long-term or high-dose steroid use (including steroid eye drops, inhalers, or pills). Health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea are often discussed alongside glaucoma risk as well, and even when they’re not the direct cause, they’re good reasons to take eye health seriously and keep regular checkups. The most practical takeaway is that you don’t need symptoms to have glaucoma, so periodic eye exams matter, especially if you have any of these risk factors.

When it comes to medication, Careprost contains bimatoprost, which belongs to the prostaglandin analog family. These drops are commonly used for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension because they lower eye pressure by improving fluid outflow. They are not a cure, but they are often very effective at keeping pressure in a safer range and slowing progression when used consistently. Many people use them once daily, typically in the evening, but the exact schedule and choice of drop should be guided by an eye professional who can measure your eye pressure, examine the optic nerve, and track visual fields over time.

It’s also worth being realistic about side effects and proper use. With bimatoprost, common local effects include eye redness, mild irritation, dryness, and a sensation like something is in the eye. Some people notice eyelash growth and darkening, and there can be gradual darkening of the iris or skin around the eye, which may be long-lasting. Rarely, it can worsen certain inflammatory eye conditions or contribute to swelling in the back of the eye in higher-risk individuals. That’s why «it worked for someone else» isn’t enough; the right drop is the one that fits your eyes, your health history, and your exam findings. Technique matters too: using the correct number of drops, avoiding touching the bottle tip to the eye, and pressing gently at the inner corner of the eyelids for a short time after instilling the drop can reduce drainage into the nose and limit unwanted systemic absorption.

Lifestyle steps like staying consistent with treatment, keeping follow-up visits, and avoiding unnecessary steroid use can genuinely make a difference. General healthy habits such as moderate exercise and good sleep support overall vascular health, but they don’t replace pressure-lowering treatment when glaucoma is present. If you ever develop sudden severe eye pain, redness with nausea, or sudden vision changes, you should treat that as urgent regardless of what drops you have at home, because acute angle-closure requires immediate medical care.
