In the late '90s, the idea of black watches, of limited edition timepieces, and of big watches, was not something oft seen. And yet, François' idea to do a watch for a little seen Arnold Schwarzenegger film called End of Days was a seminal moment. It was his first restricted edition, and the first black AP — and it began a relationship with Arnold that would continue through today. It's important to note that his involvement was a break through second for AP — Arnold was the biggest movie star in the world, and it would lead to a charity event in conjunction with no one less than Muhammad Ali. And it was the first time AP was put on the map, and for the first time, high-end watches could be considered fun.
There are wrist watches that pre-date the ceramic perpetual calendar that I think are important and lead up to it -- the End associated with Days would be one, but also the Jay-Z limited edition would be another. Jay-Z as well as FHB are 20+ year friends, and their Offshore collaboration was, in my opinion, the release that changed everything for AP, and for [*****]-hop in designer watches. The End regarding Days had been before my time, but Jay-Z had not been, and when which watch came out, it felt like, for the first time, Swiss watchmaking was actually speaking to people the age. Their history and friendship runs strong to this day.
In 2017, AP introduced the actual perpetual work schedule in full hard — and also the second I saw it, I knew it would be the game-changer. In my introducing story I known as it the watch of the show. And when François says this watch revived the perpetual calendar mechanism from the grave, he's not kidding. At the time, steel everlasting Royal Oaks were trading for about $25, 000. Platinum about $50, 000. I remember that, because the minute this particular watch arrived, I went searching for my own perpetual Royal Oak (which I found while still in Geneva).
